18 boats competed in KWSC’s Windward Leeward Open Meeting. Saturday saw a force 5-6 with big shifts and gusts but the wind was a steadier force 3 on Sunday leading to some close racing throughout the fleet. The symmetric boats tended to do best in the heavier and lighter winds, with the asymmetrics (particularly the Musto Skiffs) performing better in intermediate winds.
The challenging conditions on Saturday led a certain amount of swapping boats and crews, and some Did Not Starts and Did Not Finishes. Honourable mentions for perseverance go to William Pym and Mark Baker in an RS Vision, and to Philip Tebbs and Nancy Burn in a Wayfarer. Peter Hawkin managed to sail most boats, starting off in an RS200, then a Wanderer for the rest of Saturday, and a Supernova for the remaining 4 races on Sunday.
Colin Murray and his family from Windermere won the prize for furthest-travelled boat with their head-turning National 18.
The race management and galley provision were of the usual high calibre.
The next open meeting will be the Dam to Dam Challenge on 6 May. For further information see www.kielderwatersc.org, or contact Mike Scott, 01835 870238.
