Radio Marblehead Midlands Ranking Open at Charnwood Water

by Tony Edwards 30 Oct 2007 10:15 GMT 28 October 2007

A small but select band of Radio Marblehead sailors gathered at Leicester RYC’s Charnwood Water for the final RM ranking event of 2007 on 28 October. The first day of wintertime was truly a day of two halves. Wet and stormy conditions greeted the fleet in the morning and as the cold front came through with a deluge at lunchtime, bright sunshine lit up Charnwood in the afternoon but with only very light cyclonic winds

The variable conditions were reflected in the results. 7 races were sailed in strong winds with most competitors using C rigs providing wins for Roy Stevens (Starkers), 4 wins for Roger Stollery (Tube) and one win each for Mike Weeks (Starkers) and Alf Reynolds (Paradox). During the morning the wind was unstable with considerable variation and strength providing many place changes and spectacular off-wind diving during the racing.

The wind was so light after lunch that only 4 more races were sailed over short courses. Afternoon wins for Don Charlesworth (Wafer), Mike Weeks, Mick Shillington (Paradox) and finally Roger Stollery. Local Skipper Roy Waddington led the last race on several occasions and was delighted to finish second with his 1990 vintage Aixtra.

Overall, despite 5 wins Roger Stollery was pipped by the more consistent Mike Weeks from the host club who was thrilled to take the Tucker “Brick” Trophy home again for the sideboard.

Overall Results:

1st Mike Weeks 19pts
2nd Roger Stollery 21pts
3rd Roy Stevens 26pts
4th Mick Shillington 28pts
5th Alf Reynolds 41pts
