Under the title of “Junior Fortnight” Itchenor Sailing Club has been running a comprehensive programme of events for over 220 young people ranging in age from 8 to 18. Over the two weeks from July 27th 140 boats have been competing in 96 races.
Younger crews are sailing in the Mirror dinghy and the more experienced in the 420 or single handed Topper and Lasers.
This traditional event sees many Mums and Dads introducing their offspring to the delights of sailing in Chichester Harbour as they were by their parents. Former participants have gone on to National and International honours and even in the case of Christine Bassadone, a Junior Fortnight regular for many years, the Olympic Games.
Carolyn Brigg, Rear Commodore at Itchenor says: “This fortnight sees young people learning a wide range of sailing skills. It reinforces our position as an RYA Volvo Champion Club and our commitment to youth sailing and race coaching.”
But it is not just learning to sail and race. Land based activities have also been taking place as diverse as crazy golf, cricket, rounders and crabbing.
The event will be rounded off on Friday with a prize giving, an “Itchenor’s got talent” show and, of course a disco.
