Virtual Rigger Topper Winter Regatta at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy

by Ben Whaley 13 Feb 2013 17:23 GMT 9-10 February 2013

The fleet arrived at Weymouth to a calm but slightly miserable day of cloud and rain with a stable 10 knot breeze coming from the West. With 156 entries, everyone was split into 4 flights, mixing around every race so everyone races against each other. With the breeze keeping steady, the fleet managed to launch on time at 10:15 for a hopeful 3 races during the day.

The first race saw Nick Devereux and Haydn Griffiths posting bullets, with Elliot Kuzyk and Alexander Hughes 2nd, followed by Patrick Croghan and Ben Whaley 3rd.

The next race saw Crispin Beaumont and Ben Jennings emerge from the fleet as winners, closely followed by Tom Wallwork and Luke Robertson in 2nd with Aaron Holman and Ben Whaley finishing in 3rd place.

Race 3 saw the wind die down a little to around 6 or 7 knots, this time Patrick Croghan and Aaron Holman posted firsts, with Crispin Beaumont and Alexander Hughes in 2nd, closely followed by a new face at the top: Ollie Dixon, and Ben Jennings in 3rd place. The fleet then returned to shore with some of the bigger sailors battling cramp from the tight topper light wind positions.

Sunday dawned to a 30 knot breeze from the South East. Most of the heavy sailors were eager to get going to rise back up towards the top of the fleet. The racing was postponed until the wind calmed down and at 12:30 the fleet launched to a 20 knot breeze from the South East.

Race 4 eventually started after a 180 degrees shift and a sudden drop in wind; the wind was now coming from the North West at a steady 13 to 15 knots. Once again Aaron Holman posted a bullet, but this time alongside Nathaniel Gordon, a new face in the top 3 this regatta. 2nd places went to Crispin Beaumont and Alexander Hughes again and the 3rd places were taken by another new face in the top 3, Zak Morten, with Ben Whaley posting his third 3rd place of the Event.

The 5th race of the event got underway but was immediately abandoned as a mighty 35 knot squall colonised Weymouth Harbour, forcing the fleet back to shore for the final time during the weekend. After everyone packed up, the prize giving was held in the Spinnaker Lounge upstairs at the Academy.

The overall winner was Crispin Beaumont from Bartley with a mere 4 points from the 3 races that he was counting (each sailor got 1 discard as 4 races were sailed) followed a very close 2nd place to Haydn Griffiths from Leigh and Lowton on 8 points, also on 8 points was 3rd place Ben Jennings from Rutland SC and 4th place Alexander Hughes from Sutton SC. 5th place Ben Whaley from Swanage SC was close behind on 9 points followed by 6th place Patrick Croghan from Queen Mary SC on 10 points to complete a very close top 6 all inside 10 points. The first girl prize went to Rhiannon Flack from Spinnaker in 12th place, 2nd girl Chloe Barr from Hill Head SC in 19th place and 3rd girl was Harriet Ward from Hayling Island SC in 20th place.

A great thanks to the event sponsor Virtual Rigger. The next National event will be National Series 1 on April 13th & 14th at Datchet.
