Crewsaver 24 Hour Race at West Lancashire Yacht Club

by Nicola Sinclair White 22 Sep 2013 13:12 BST 7-8 September 2013

This year's race weekend got off to the usual lively start on the Friday night in the marquee with the promise of an equally lively race due to the strong winds forecast for Saturday and Sunday. Whilst the start provided us with winds varying from 5 to 18 knots, the strong winds forecast for the full 24 hours never fully materialised although a couple of wet and windy squalls kept us all on our toes.

In total 61 teams from all over the UK fought it out over the 24 hours with the furthest travelling up from Penzance for the race and quite a few clubs entering for their first which was great to see. South Staffs (A) team in a GP14 lead from the start taking the trophy for the fastest first 2 laps and overnight they built a clear lead.

Sunday morning provided lighter winds and some bright sunshine which would last until the end of the race. The early hours of the morning saw Bolton SC (A), Midlands SC, West Lancs YC (GP), Pilkington SC and West Lancs YC (Ent) tussle over positions 4 to 8 with the other teams in the top 10 holding their positions.

South Staffs (A) in a GP14 went on to win the event overall making this the 3rd time they have taken the title in the 47 years of running the event. The first placed Enterprise was Pilkington SC (7th overall), the Lark Class Association finished as leading Lark (12th overall) and the first placed Firefly was West Oxfordshire SC (18th overall). The leading University team was a joint team of Manchester and Liverpool Universities (32nd overall) and the first placed Master Team was WLYC Ent (8thoverall).

Well done to all the teams who finished this year's event and special congratulations to Sam Blocksidge and Ed Dutton from South Staffs who sailed the whole 24 hours with no assistance to raise money for the RNLI and finished 23rd overall!

Thank you to Crewsaver and the rest of our sponsors, GJW Direct Dinghy Insurance, Robinson's Brewery, Ramada Hotel Southport, Monkey's Fist, TEU Containers, Dorman and Oakhurst Southport.
