2013 Setley Cup and Seahorse Trophy Junior Model Yacht Regatta

The ice was glinting in the early sunlight on Setley Pond as the race team arrived to set up for 2013 event. The main concern was that there might not be enough wind to test the fleet of multi and monohull boats, but those doing pre-race pond trials seemed happy that their creations would see off the competition.
In spite of a flurry of late entries racing started at 11am with the monohulls off first, followed a few minutes later by the multihulls. The very light westerly breeze just about enable boats to reach both ways across the pond, making life easier for the McEwen rescue service afloat as well as the shore party who spent less time extracting themselves from the brambles. This year a number of support teams had brought their own retrieval equipment, including one fishing net which proved most effective as a 'snuffer'.
Annabel Hutchinson with 'Skittleboat was hoping to retain the Setley Cup, but Peter Bennett's very elegant 'Stiletto' proved the more consistent over the five races to take first place by one point with 'Skittle Boat' second and Daisy Heron's 'Fortune off the Tip' third a further point adrift, with an average of 10 out of the 21 boats finishing 4 races out of the 5, with one discard.
24 multihulls entered for racing for the Seahorse Trophy. Dirk Rogers' 'Danger Cat' was a convincing winner, anxiously watched by the designer (Dirk's Godfather), from the vantage point of the rescue boat he was rowing. Second and third places overall were taken by Emma Bennett's 'Tiger' and Orlando Akester's 'Wren'.
Many thanks to all the supporters, families, helpers, boat builders and especially the young helmsmen who gladly waded into the pond well over their boots. This unique Boxing Day event only takes place thanks to the work of PRO Stuart Jardine assisted by Jane Pitt-Pitts and Ann Brunskill on registration and results and the finish teams of Chris Baldwick, David Brunskill, John Evans, Ado Jardine and Robin Markes. Luke and Emma McEwen did their usual expert job in the row-boat, although they did get grounded a couple of times and Luke had to get out and push. Many thanks also to Solent Radio Controlled Model Boat Club for allowing the Setley Cup to go ahead each year.
