Brass Monkey Trophy Race at Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club

Twenty-one boats turned out for the Leigh on Sea SC annual season finale, 'The Brass Monkey Trophy Race'. There was a slight respite in the weather which allowed the race to go ahead. 24 hours earlier the Leigh foreshore had been battered by a 55mph gale, but in time to the race the wind eased to a more manageable 25mph with a few stronger gusts.

The fleet set off on a broad reach lead by a Contender sailed by Chris Boshier from Thorpe Bay. Turning on to the short beat sorted out the fleet as several boats found sailing close hauled through the mixed choppy waves very difficult.

At the start of the long reach to the gybe mark the order was Chris Boshier, followed by Mike Izatt in an RS600 with Seb Baucutt crewed by Holly Hampton sailing an RS200, these positions remained unchanged for the rest of the race.

Behind the leaders the main pack of Solos was initially led by Colin Walker, but he was passed by John Charles and Rob Tothill before the end of the three rounds.

The most disappointed competitor was Doug Rivers sailing a full rig Laser who, after completing a faultless three rounds, did not get a finish by virtue of being OCS at the start!

A passage race made this feel almost like 'offshore' racing Saturday RO Bugs Beechy used the club start line and marks for both Saturday races with a beat up the shoreline against the flood then a reach out to Ray Gut and a tight reach back to the line with two laps for each race. Including sunset drinks and burgers on the club balcony Arriving at the club early for opening up I found three visitors already waiting at the gate keen to rig their boats, despite that it was about 6 hours to high tide and 4 hours before the mud would be covered and ready for sailing.
