Oxford Carriers Supernova Winter Championships at Haversham

by Paul Undrell 24 Feb 2014 21:35 GMT 22 February 2014

A splendid 31 boats turned out for the season opening Supernova Winter Championships sponsored by Oxford Carriers and they were treated to a glorious day's sailing under blue skies in a blustery force 3-4.

Race officer Barrie Lyman set a course which used the whole of the lake and included a reach from one end of the lake to the other which showed the Supernova off at its best.

Race one saw local Richard Pakes set out his stall early on, leading all the way round the course closely pursued by last years winner Mike Gibson. The strengthening breeze saw a number of capsizes and gear failures as helms battled in close racing across the fleet.

After a hearty lunch the fleet set off for 2 more races, and in race 2 local lad Alistair Goodwin in a borrowed boat showed the regulars how to get the best out of a Supernova taking the race from the ever consistent Pakes and visiting junior Alex Collins.

Race 3 followed immediately and this time it was the national champion, Cliff Milliner, who hit the front closely followed by Goodwin and association chairman Paul Earnshaw.

After 3 close fought and testing races right across the fleet, it was Goodwin who took the meeting on countback from Pakes with Milliner 3rd and Collins 4th.

The class now looks forward to the start of the 2014 travellers series, sponsored by Noble Marine, with the first of 14 events being at Bowmoor Sailing Club on 15th March.
