Streaker Open at Chipstead Sailing Club

by Alex Reindorp 6 May 2014 14:34 BST 4 May 2014

A bright sky and light, fickle winds met the 10 competitors at Chipstead SC's Streaker Open on Sunday 4th May. Nine visiting boats from as far afield as the West Country, Midlands and East Anglia made the trip for an enjoyable day's sailing.

With the wind coming from the West, but veering and backing frequently, race one was a Committee boat start at the East end of the lake. Mike Hobin (West Oxfordshire SC), James Dawes (Redditch SC) and Veronica Falat (Waveney & Oulton Broad YC) chose the port end of the line in the first race and contested the windward leg as well as much of the race. James finally came out the winner with Veronica taking 2nd and Mike 3rd.

After a break for lunch, the shifty conditions were much the same and a similar course to race one was set from the Committee boat. Alex Reindorp (Chipstead SC) started from the middle of the line and had the benefit of a puff of wind on the upwind leg that took him ahead of the fleet. A mis-timed tack to the windward mark allowed Scott Bonner (Durleigh SC), Graham Butler (Frencham Ponds SC) and Ian Bradley (Ouse Amateur SC) to slip through, leaving Alex in the chasing pack with Jon Hill (Bough Beech SC) and Alan Simmons (Lancing SC). The race finished with Scott Bonner taking line honours followed by James Dawes and then Graham Butler.

In the third race a transit start line was set from the from the race box and whilst the race began with almost no wind at all, a gentle breeze filled in during the first beat which remained for the rest of the race. Ian Bradley took an early lead and which he held to the finish, James Dawes followed in second with Graham Butler, Veronica Falat and Alex Reindorp battling for third spot throughout the race.

The Streaker Class would like to extend warm thanks to Chipstead SC for hosting the event and making the day an enjoyable one for all who attended.
