The Yare & Bure One Design Open was held over the weekend of 2nd/3rd September and was hosted by Horning Sailing Club on Black Horse Broad in near gale force winds. Altogether 16 YBODs took part in the event.
Saturday's racing was held in gusty conditions, which proved to be challenging for the competitors and led to four retirements in the second race.
Sunday saw even stronger winds, leading to breakages and yet more retirements. Although reefing wasn't obligatory, many helms took the decision to put in up to 3 reefs, as well as some using storm jibs, and going 3 up! Casualties included 3 broken masts, while Fleet Captain Mike Reilly became the latest member of the (thankfully very exclusive) White Boat Submarine Club after capsizing and sinking!
The penultimate race only attracted four competitors, after which the strong winds resulted in the last race of the series being abandoned, having only two takers for the race and the mast breaking on one of these just before the 5 minute starting signal!
Ian Timms, sailing Scarlet Admiral, the oldest boat to take part, won every race and therefore the Series, Christian Young in Adonis was second overall, and Chris Bunn in Silver Skipper third.
