Tor Bay was a sight to behold with over 100 boats on the water this weekend as Paignton Sailing Club hosted the 2023 Paignton Open for Single Handers (POSH), sponsored by Sailing Chandlery. This year the event also included the Fire National Championship.

Sailing commenced in champagne conditions on day one with moderate wind and sunshine but by the third race the wind had softened with light winds making the final push across the finish line more of a challenge, but this did not dampen the overall positive feedback on the course and event as a whole. Day two turned out to be a carbon copy of the first day with the wind dying throughout the day.

Race Officer Ian Bullock, and his team of mark layers, did a superb job in creating and managing slick and fault free race starts with 3 fleets crossing the start line in rapid succession. The Fires started first, quickly followed by the bulk of the competitors in the 'POSH' division, with two starts, slow and fast handicap, all sailing on an outer loop trapezoid course. With 88 boats sailing on the same course, mark rounding and downwind gates made for exhilarating racing.

The final fleet to start was the asymmetric fleet of RS100s which sailed a windward/leeward course using a separate windward mark to give an extended course.

For the first ever Fire national championship, the 14 competitors had very close racing but it was Christian Smart, making up for an early mistake, who took the win from Mike Lyons and Paignton Sailor Mark Ripley making up the podium.

The mixed handicap fleet of 74 boats was dominated by the large K1 fleet who revelled in the sub-planing conditions. Simon Hawkes took 6 wins and led home his fellow K1 sailors Jeremy Hudson and Ian Jay to make it a K1 one, two, three. Fourth was the ILCA 7 of local sailor Ben Flower and Gavin Young in the Supernova in fifth putting in some early practice for the national that Paignton SC will be hosting at the end of June.

The RS100 overall win was decided on count back with Matt Johnson and Ian Gregory both scoring 11 points and Mark Harrison in third. See the RS100 report and results.

The RS300 class also enjoyed attending. Results for other classes are below.

Paignton Sailing Club would like to thank Sailing Chandlery for their continued support of this event.
