Noble Marine & Sailingfast ILCA 6 Autumn Qualifier (Q6) at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy

by Iris Singleton 26 Oct 2023 16:07 BST 21-22 October 2023

This weekend saw the second of the ILCA qualifiers at WPNSA which ran in a very similar way to the last. The fleet of 76 ILCA 6s was split into four flights for a qualifying series on day one before being separated into a gold and a silver fleet for day two. The weather was a little warmer and the wind a little stronger than the previous event making it a tough, but enjoyable weekend.

Saturday began with northerly wind of 9-11 knots meaning a long beat out of the harbour and into Weymouth Bay. There was a short postponement before the ILCA 7s started their first race however, within minutes, conditions changed quite drastically bringing heavy wind and rain, and a large left shift. The race was quickly abandoned, and, after some course adjustment, all fleets managed to start their first race, now in a breezy 22-25 knots of wind.

In the red and green fleet, Alfie Noel led at the first windward mark and protected his position well throughout the race, only being beaten by Hamish Collingridge who won the race with Carys Attwell coming in 3rd. In the yellow and blue fleet, another Collingridge took the win with Daisy in 1st, Mathilda Nicholls in 2nd and Jon Emmett in 3rd. The race was a real test of physical endurance while sailors had to remain conscious of the frequent shifts as the wind came over the surrounding hills and through Weymouth town.

This test of stamina continued into the second race as the wind continued to build to a high of 30 knots and there were little to no opportunities for significant gain, with small shifts and the wind consistently random across the course. A good start, clear lane and flat boat were essential and, proving their skills in these areas, nearly all the same sailors took the podium positions once again.

In the third race, the wind shifted left and dropped quite significantly, steadily decreasing further throughout the race. This led to a very different race to the other two and a different group of sailors at the top, apart from Daisy Collingridge and Mathilda Nicholls who achieved race wins once again.

After day one, the top 39 sailors were assigned to the gold fleet with the remaining sailing in silver, which made for some very tight racing in both fleets on Sunday. Due to the lighter wind of 14-20 knots and west/south-west wind direction, racing took place in Portland harbour for all fleets.

The conditions were relatively unchanging throughout the day and all three races were mainly about getting a good start and playing the shifts. With a closely packed fleet, the downwind leg was also a key area for gaining and losing with difficult decisions between pressure or sailing a shorter distance.

The final race of the day for gold fleet saw a considerable left shift and a black-flag start meant that getting off the line and finding a clear lane to hold on port was vital but tricky. Across all three races, Daisy, Mathilda and Jon dominated the top three positions with only Freddie Sunderland managing to sneak in with a third in the second race of the day.

At the end of the event, Daisy Collingridge came out on top with 5 bullets across the weekend, Mathilda Nicholls came in 2nd and Jon Emmet finished in 3rd as first male and first master. An impressive performance put Hamish Collingridge in 4th overall and first U19 male while first U19 female was Carys Attwell. Third female and first U21 female was Charlotte Videlo, who achieved three top 5 results over the weekend, and first U17 was Alfie Noel.

Silver fleet was won by U19 sailor Kaitlyn Wyatt after consistent racing throughout the event and Noah Evans and Edward Smith came in 2nd and 3rd.

As always, a huge thank you to the sponsors of the event - Sailingfast, Ovington, Noble Marine and Rooster - as well as all the volunteers, both on and off the water, who make these events possible.
