A blustery October weekend welcomed 25 Cadets from Frensham Pond and Rickmansworth to join the strong home fleet at Waldringfield Sailing club on the River Deben. The sailors had benefited from some excellent preparation before the event from the legendary Michael MacNamara but could they put it into practice?

Day one saw the regatta fleet race wins go to Jenna and Daisy and Emily and Clara with three races sailed across high tide. Whilst the main fleet winners of Sam and Isabelle, Hettie and Clementine and Alex and Jude ensured the standard Waldringfield sibling rivalry was off to a good start.

An increase in wind strength ensured that the sailors were in for an exciting second day of the event.

Whilst the safety boats kept an eye on the approaching front, the race officer managed to get in two more exciting races with Alex and Jude gaining their second win followed by Rhona and Sophie who with their consistent scores were hot on their transom for the event win.

Things were equally close in the regatta fleet with Jenna and Daisy and Emily and Clara both securing another race win.

It was all to play for in race 6. And then the squall hit. The safety boats were suddenly very busy as the 32 knots of wind was accompanied by a synchronized capsize mostly the regatta fleet. Meanwhile the main fleet battled round one lap before the course was shortened and finished. Well done to all the sailors and fleet winners.

Emily and Clara regatta fleet winners proved that mindset is everything and set out to win the regatta fleet at their first open event. Here's a short extract from Emily:

On Saturday we had our first day of racing and a lot more wind! We did three races, Jenna and Daisy from Frensham Pond and Fishers Green won the first race. After Emily and Clara from Waldringfield won the second and third race, we went in for cake.

On Sunday there was meant to be a storm but luckily we manged to fit in two races. Jenna and Daisy won the first race and Emily and Clara won the second. Clara then decided she was converted to a windy weather fan and prayed for more wind. It worked! A 32 knot squall came through. All nine regatta fleet boats capsized and the rescue team were busy!

Race 6 was abandoned. We managed to all get in safely, for prize-giving and George and Jasper returned still singing.
