Middle Island Regatta at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Preview

by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club 29 Mar 2011 09:10 BST 2-3 April 2011

The 11th Middle Island Regatta hosted by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) will be held this weekend on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April, 2011 at RHKYC’s Middle Island site and on the waters off Deep Water Bay / Repulse Bay / Stanley.

The Middle Island Regatta is open to all classes of Dinghy and since 2009, this event has been designated as a Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association (HKODA) Ranking Regatta, one of six held each year. These rankings not only show the progress of the sailors through the season but the results are also used to decide who will represent Hong Kong at the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) Worlds and Asian Championships. There are currently over 50 sailors in the rankings.

This year’s Middle Island Regatta, has attracted over 100 adult and youth sailors from RHKYC, Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Aberdeen Yacht Club, the Sail Training Association of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Sea School, sailing in over 80 dinghy entries in the following divisions:

  • Optimist Class (where a majority of sailors are aged under 12)
  • Division A (Fast Division) (classes of dinghies include Laser, Laser 2000, Laser Radial, RS 400, Wayfarer)
  • Division B (Slow Division) (classes of dinghies include Laser 4.7, RS Feva, RS Q’Ba)

Two races are scheduled for the Saturday with the warning signal of the first race being 1425hrs. On the Sunday, three races are scheduled with the first warning signal for the start at 1025hrs. The Race Officer for the weekend’s racing is Nigel Reeves and Assistant Race Officer is Suzanne Downes. Both bring a wealth of experience to this important regatta on the youth sailing calendar.

Prizes will be awarded in each division at a prizegiving to be held as soon as possible after Sunday’s racing.
