RYA to hold ‘Girls 4 Gold Womens Skiff Open Training

by Lindsey Bell, RYA 19 Apr 2011 21:15 BST 14-15 May & 18-19 June 2011

If you’re female, aged 17 or over and ever wondered just what Olympic classes sailing is all about, then the RYA has the two weekends for you.

In anticipation of ISAF’s selection of a women’s skiff event for the 2016 Olympic Games, the RYA and Skandia Team GBR are arranging two ‘Girls 4 Gold’ women’s skiff open training weekends, on 14-15 May at Hayling Island Sailing Club, and 18-19 June at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, open to helms and crews in all high-performance asymmetric two-person boats.

Run by an all-female coaching and support team, the training weekends will offer sailors top tips on RS800 rig-tuning and the chance to sail in some of the women’s skiff classes hoping to gain selection for the 2016 Olympic Games (Rebel, 29erXX and RS900), as well as providing insights into life on the Olympic campaign trail.

“Whether you’re a club sailor in one of the high-performance double-handers looking to pick up some advice, or you’re an aspiring Olympian with an eye on the introduction of a women’s skiff class, our Girls 4 Gold weekends will have something for you,” explained RYA Racing Pathway Manager Kirsty Bonar.

“We’ve got a great coaching and support team on hand to offer their expertise and some fantastic twin-trapeze boats to have a demo sail in, so these weekends should be a lot of fun!”
