Quantum J/24 Worlds in Ontario, Canada - Day 2

by Event Press 24 Jul 2002 10:09 BST

Day 1:

Sixty-two competitors representing ten nations were greeted by 12-15 knot southeasterly winds for the first race of the 2002 J/24 World Championships. The steady wind direction and 4-6 foot swells put a premium on proper rig tune and boat speed. Geoff Moore of Newport, RI took the bullet followed by fellow East Coast sailor, Britt Hughes.

Race two showed the wind slowly turning left and dying as the swell remained making power through the waves the primary concern. A Japanese team skippered by Tsurugi Kasahara showed these conditions to their liking as they finished first as the breeze died to less the five knots. Britt Hughes finished third behind Tim Healy's Newport team to top the score sheet at the end of the day.

Back at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, site of the 1976 Olympic Regatta, the competitive spirit continued with a street hockey tournament featuring teams composed of sailors from various countries. In the end, team Mexico prevailed in the challenger division and will face team Canada in tomorrow's finals.

Day 2:

A cold front moved through southern Canada this morning bringing rain and cooler temperatures to Kingston. The race committee postponed on shore as the forecast called for winds to shift 180 degrees to the north as the front passed. As predicted the front moved through, ushering in beautiful (but shifty) sailing conditions with sunny skies and 10-12 knots winds. Forty degree shifts were the order of the day and staying in phase was challenging in the offshore north wind.

After two general recalls the fleet got away under a black flag start. Patrick Toole of Santa Barbara, California finished first, followed by Yon Belausteguigoitia of Mexico and Tim Healy. Shifty conditions continued for race two with several 30 to 40 degree shifts on the windward legs keeping the lead changing until the end. At the finish, Waldek Zaleski of Norwalk, Connecticut found the last left shift to take the gun ahead of Andy Horton's team. Andy's consistent day of 5,2 in inconsistent conditions, moves him into fourth place overall.
