The Race Team Legato Report

by Barry Pickthall on 25 Jan 2001
Tony Bullimore and his TEAM LEGATO crew have made up another 49 miles on
their Polish rivals in THE RACE over the past 24 hours, closing the gap to
819 miles as Warta Polpharma continues her struggle to shake clear of the
High pressure system they find themselves in. At 03:00 today the Polish, who
are now close to the island of Tristan da Cunha, were having problems
bettering 5 knots to TEAM LEGATO’s 9knots.

It is quite sticky where TEAM LEGATO is too. “Yesterday has got to be the
hottest day since the start of the race.” Bullimore remarked. “Dark blue
seas, pale blue skies and tremendous heat that is countered only by the
light breeze running across the boat. Every now and then we sail a little
more to windward to build up the apparent wind. This makes us go faster but
takes us off course. We do it simply to cool us down.”
Now down to 27S, Bullimore and his crew expect to pick up stronger winds in
the Southern Ocean within a couple of days

Leading positions at 03:00 GMT today
1. Club Med 15,891 miles to finish
2. Innovation Explorer +697 miles
3. Team Adventure 2049 miles – IN CAPE TOWN FOR REPAIRS
4. Warta Polpharma 2987 miles
5. Team Legato 3801 miles
