The Hornet Open Meeting hosted by Thorpe Bay YC was a joint meeting with the Phantom class. Four races were held over the course of the 12th and 13th July.

Saturdays racing was a tight affair across the board with the 20 boat fleet grateful for the steadying force 2 breeze.

Race One started second time round. Dave & Fran Wood (GBR2175) led at the windward mark, to be overtaken on the second leg of the triangle by Andy Long and Mark McGarry (GBR2157). Long & McGarry held this position to the finish with the Woods in second place and John Jones & June Riley in third.

Race Two started first time round in a slightly stronger breeze. Ray & Jan Alderman (GBR2172) had a blinder of a first beat and led by a comfortable margin from the windward mark to the finish. John Jones & June Riley (GBR2039) took second with Dave & Fran Wood taking third.

Sunday saw Thorpe 'Summer' Bay produce a good Force 4 with lovely sunshine. Race 3 saw Andy Long and Mark McGarry lead from start to finish chased hard by Lewis Woodland & Nic Barnes (GBR2140), with conditions to their liking both boats extended their lead on the fleet to a considerable margin up until the finish. Dave & Fran Wood took third position.

Race 4 had a clean start. Long & McGarry led from start to finish with Dean Saxton and Rob Smith (GBR2103) in second who held this position until the final reach when they were overtaken by Dave and Fran Wood.

Terry Curtis and Gavin Poulion wear the crown The third day of the Hornet Nationals was never looking promising and 30 plus Knots on the racecourse left the committee no options but to abandon racing for the day, this gave the fleet the opportunity to explore the beautiful Mumbles coastline. The racing was overshadowed by the fantastic talent show on the water The sunshine dwindling and the breeze building, the fleet assembled in the dinghy park. A 2 mile run to the start line in 20 knots gave Skudder/Hills the best opportunity, having seen the forecast, to demonstrate capsize drills to the fleet. Posted on 11 Aug 2023
