“Every week is unique” said Commodore Ross Watson at the prize giving and he was not wrong. Tummel Week 2003 served up an exacting cocktail of wind and weather conditions for the 50 boat fleet to enjoy. This family sailing week takes place each year in late July at Loch Tummel Sailing Club which has the incredibly peaceful and picturesque setting of Foss, near Pitlochry within sight of the famous Queen’ View.

Whether camping in the peaceful and secluded grounds around the former schoolhouse which serves as the clubrooms or using the extensive holiday accommodation in the area, Tummel Week provides what must be amongst the best of all family sailing holidays. This year the usual children’s attractions of sandpit, treasure hunt and games programme were supplemented by the addition of a highly popular Developoment Class using Mirrors, Optimists and Reefed Toppers.

A very popular feature being the 6 plastic Oppis on loan from Ancrum Outdoor Education Centre at Dundee, well used by adults and children alike for everything from children’s development races to trips around the bay for toddlers.

Racing this year was in an all classes handicap fleet sailing 10 average lap time races between Sunday and Friday. Donald Smith, a Tummel Week regular brought his Fireball “Crocodile Gordon” direct from the European Fireball Championships on Shetland and was rewarded with first place in the traditional Island Race held on Wednesday. Second was eight year old Samantha Foster sailing a borrowed RS 200 with father Graham and third was the ever present Craig Moffat in his Solo, another Tummel Week regular. In the overall series, the single class format kept the racing very close throughout the week and prevented anyone from dominating their class.

At the end of the event it was RS200 sailors Richard and Val Evans from Chanonry who found the right combination of speed and consistency to claim the overall crown of Tummel Week Champions 2003. Second place went to Craig Moffat and third was Donald Smith. First Under 16 was Catharine Annan sailing her Topper. Thank you LTSC for another excellent event.
