Mumm 30 Worlds at Portoferraio, Elba, Italy Overall

Italy will keep the Royal Canadian Yacht Club trophy for another year. Claudio Rechhi and Carla Ubertelli’s Cheyenne navigated their way through the last day of very tough conditions to claim the World Championship title. Ubertelli said that it was not an easy win. The day was long with numerous postponements to reset the line and wait for the fluky breeze to settle in long enough for a starting sequence to be completed. Dark clouds covered the mountaintops, and the wind was light to start with and finally filled in later in the afternoon and clocked around to 155 degrees for the last race, which had an upwind “closer to home” finish.
The final three races of the series followed the pattern of whoever got a good start and the first shift, were able to stay out of the fray at the mark roundings and out of the protest room in the evening.
The Mumm 30 Worlds in 2004 returns to North America and will be hosted by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, on August 25-28.
