IOS Sailing Club launches new Weather Cam

by James Bell 14 Oct 2003 16:50 BST

IOS Sailing Club located at Sheerness on the north coast of the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, have launched a new online weather cam service for the Thames Estuary and surrounding area.

The free service has been developed by Kent-based web design company Designbell in partnership with IOS Sailing Club and Swale Borough Council.

The weather cam combines a photo quality image, with comprehensive weather information taken directly from the club's weather station at 5 minute intervals. Real-time wind speed and direction are also available using the latest in Flash technology.

The weather cam shows a clear view of the sailing club's start line from their race tower, a north facing structure offering panoramic views across the Thames Estuary towards Southend-on-sea.

The club believes they are the first in the UK to offer real-time wind speed on their website, and first with a webcam focused on a sailing start line.

Accurate wind speed and direction can be expected. The anemometer is mounted at the top of the clubs flagstaff, undisturbed by any other structure for miles around in every direction.

Links are also provided to Sheerness tide times and the inshore and shipping forecasts from the Met Office.

To access the service, simply log on to www.iossc.org.uk/weather
