Nineteen Mirrors enjoyed a superb days racing at Bosham Mirror Open, part of the popular Southern Traveller series. At the front the Yeoman brothers, George and Jack dominated proceedings with two straight wins. The next five places were incredibly close, with just two points separating this group.
With a light northerly and a strong flood tide, it was a long sail out to the start. With the tide under the fleet and the inevitable general recall, race one eventually got under way. The Yeomans led from start to finish and were never really challenged, making the most of the conditions and their local Chichester Harbour knowledge. The pursing pack experienced many place changes and some close racing, with Tom Robinson and Shaun Mason of Warsash coming second and South Zone Squad members Jamie Knill and Lewis Rumbol of Poole third.
Race two saw a similar pattern of recalls and the Yeoman Brother dominating from start to finish. Again the rest of the fleet enjoyed very close racing, p laying out a challenging game of snakes and ladders in deciding which shore to hug when avoiding the strong tide on the run. In the end father and son team, Graham and James Griffin of Chichester, took second place from Tom and Shaun.
With a change in tide and a dying wind with the sea breeze trying to establish itself, Race Three proved very challenging. Most of the fleet were caught out by the change in tide and struggled to make the start on time, National Squad sailors Josh Rumbol and Tom Davidson of Poole, judged the conditions perfectly and led from start to finish. After a late start, father and son pair, Simon and James Lovesey from Warsash split from the fleet on the second beat to find more wind on the Eastern shore to finish in second place, with Graham and James Griffin third.
The Mirror Southern Traveller Series consists of twelve events on inland and coastal waters, many are supported by training days.
