Miracle Open at Teesdale Sailing Club

by Graham Nunn 14 Jun 2004 10:46 BST 13th June

8 visitors from as far a field as Derby and Manchester joined the home boats in a new event hosted by Teesdale Sailing Club on Sunday 13th June. Conditions were perfect with a 3-4, bright sunshine and equally warm welcome from the host club.

The first race was lead by Ian Kelly & Sam Marshall closely followed by David & Michelle Raines who in turn were being chased by Chris Williams & June Sands and John & Anne Bailey. It finished in this order with Bailey moving up to third, as Williams had to retire with a broken traveller.

After a good lunch, the second race got underway in increasing wind and was lead from the start by Raines with Kelly & Williams close behind. Kelly managed to overhaul Raines on the second downwind leg and the leading pair opened up a considerable gap from the rest of the chasing boats. It finished with Kelly first, taking the overall event win, Raines second and Williams third.

With the event won Kelly decided to sit out the third race, which allowed three boats to fight it out for overall second place. Raines, showed his determination and lead from the start, securing second overall with Bailey scoring a second & Williams third.

The first Teesdale boat home was sailed by Richard Hewitt and the first non-spinnaker boat, again from Teesdale was sailed by H & D Nolson.
