Omega-Xenon Open at Datchet Watcher Sailing Club

by Chris Fife-Schaw 17 Mar 2007 21:58 GMT 17 March 2007

The 2006 Omega and Xenon events had shown that the two boats were quite comparable on speed so for the 2007 season the decision was taken to merge the two classes and run joint events with the boats sailing as a single fleet. The new Omega-Xenon Association’s first Open meeting of 2007 was held at Datchet SC on sunny, warm and windy Saturday.

The first two races were run in a good strong wind with a fair few boats capsizing, but most racers able to complete the course. After lunch the wind got up and several boats never made it to the start line, and conditions proved quite challenging for those that stayed the course.

The real competition was between Pete and Alicia Bennett (Xenon) and Grant and David Blake (Xenon) with Pete/Alicia getting a clean sweep of three wins and Grant/David taking three seconds. With the wind still rising and the overall result not in question the final race of the day was sensibly cancelled. Chris Fife-Schaw/Allan Edwards were the best placed Omega crew in 4th but the first three places went to Xenons so it was round 1 to the Xenons.
