Glorious sunshine and a gusty breeze greeted the nine visitors from six clubs who joined the home fleet for Evesham Sailing Club’s British Moth open meeting on the River Avon.
National champion Rob Wilder made the long journey from Tamesis Club worthwhile with a masterful display of boat handling and tactics and those who had the time to watch must have learnt a great deal.
Wilder took the first race by some distance and the gap was made greater by Roger Witts (Frampton) capsizing just before the line allowing David Eales (Banbury) and Ian Haywood (Evesham) to take second and third place. In the second race Witts mad no such mistake and finished a good second to Wilder with Graham Pope (Severn) and Andrew Parker-Mowbray (Frampton) fighting it out for the minor placings. The final race followed a similar pattern to the second except for Pope and Parker Mowbray reversing their positions.
Viv Brookes took the ladies prize showing that skill can overcome a lack of weight in most conditions.
As always Evesham’s hospitality was first rate and it was nice to return there after a break of a couple of years and the growth both in home fleet and the travellers augers well for the future
