Flying Fifteen Classic at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club

by Sue Bannister 7 Jun 2007 14:12 BST 2-3 June 2007

The sun shone brightly in clear skies for the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club Flying Fifteens Classic with competitive racing in light winds.

Despite the very gentle winds, both days had excellent sailing with Southerly winds of around force 1 to 2. The wind direction was ideal for racing in the Cardiff Bay area as it allowed as long a windward leg as possible and a good trapezoid course with good kite legs.

In R1 the fleet was split going up the beat with those going left finding a big lift at the windward mark

Leading was Graham Lamond/Scott train hotly pursued by Duncan Baird/Tim Bowen, both sailing beautiful Chippendales.

Lamond/Train maintained their lead over Baird with Colin Fletcher passing Bob Tait to take 3rd place on a shortened course with a falling breeze.

In Race 2 the line honours again went to Graham Lamond 2nd was Duncan Baird with Colin Fletcher 3rd.

Beer and BBQ was then welcomed by most sailors who made the most of the clubs extensive facilities.

Sunday morning saw similar conditions, but a change in race order. Graham Lamond took a big lead on the first leg this time pursued by 2 local boats Marc Watts/Richard in 2492 and local fleet captain Ian Horton/Phill Lewis in 2655. Horton overtook Watts into second place holding off Baird who came 3rd.

The final race was won by Duncan Baird from Llangorse ahead of the consistent Lamond with third place again going to Colin Fletcher.

Congratulations go to overall winner and picking up the dragon trophy, Graham almond and Scott Train. In second place was Duncan Baird/Tim Bowen from Llangorse and in third place was Colin Fletcher/John Craddock from Llangorse.
