118th Travemuende Woche - Day 7

Strong gusts push the keelboats

Heavy winds with strong gusts swept along the race courses of the 118th Travemuende Week on Friday (27 July). But the medium distance race (26-34 nm) for the offshore classes towards Groemitz went on as planned. Also 44 Folkeboats beared the conditions with the day’s top team of Christoph Nielsen and his crew Torben Dehn und Klaus Reichenberger from Berlin, Germany. Kai Mares (Kiel, Germany) extended his lead in the Platu 25 class who determines the best German team. 13 other classes had to stay ashore due to the strong wind. The Eurocup of the RS skiff closed without another race.

When 39 yachts left the estuary of the river Trave in the morning perfect sailing conditions with force five “invited” the offshore crews. But on their way towards Groemitz the wind increased more and more. Several squalls pushed the wind speedometer up to 42 knots. The yacht Gumboots owned by Martin Sulanke from Bad Schwartau, Germany lost its mast. Others suffered damaged sails and various materials problems. First ship in Groemitz was Ohlala skippered by Katja Schmuetsch from Heiligenhafen, Germany who arrived after nearly four and a half hours in the marina on the other side of the Bay of Luebeck. Schmuetsch won the OSC III group. The overall winners in eight classes will be honoured on Saturday being back in Travemuende after the return race.

It was a hard day for the Folkeboats, but skipper Christoph Nielsen was pretty happy with the performance of his old lady. “Boat and mast are 30 years old. We own her for the first summer and never sailed her in conditions like this before. But it all worked out pretty well. And we are fast,” said the skipper from Berlin. Nielsen intends to join the Folkeboat Cup in San Francisco, USA in September. “We expect wind strong like this every day.”

Kai Mares from Kiel extended his lead in the Platu 25 class starting with a second place. The next race was postponed due to heavy gusts in a squall. Lots of boats broached. Former wind surfing professional Amelie Lux (Kiel, Germany), winner of the Olympic Silver Medal in Sydney 2000, relaxed during the short break ashore. She stands in as pit man onboard Daniel Nauck’s boat ranked 15. “My legs are green and blue, but it was pure action and great fun”, reported Lux. Continue racing later on the Mares team scored another bullet and a fourth. In the overall ranking they are nine points ahead of the new runner-ups, Niklas Ganssauge’s crew from Hamburg, Germany.

More than 60 teams in the RS skiffs passed a Eurocup week with light winds at the beginning and finally too much of it. Despite two days off racing Christian Brandt from Hamburg, Germany, who finished fifth in the RS 700 class, stroke a positive balance: “The participants will surely remember the two top days and they enjoyed the event programme as well as the clubs which were situated next to our boats on the beach. I am sure, we will return with a bigger fleet soon.”

After the back front of intense low pressure system has passed the North of Germany the wind conditions should be around force four to five on Saturday (28 July). At 11 h the offshore yachts leave Groemitz for racing back to Travemuende. All other classes hope to manage three or four races from 11.30h on.
