A fleet of Sportsboats returned to The Royal Northumberland Yacht Club for the Northern Championships this year. A varied fleet from the North East coat of England, including the new Projection 762 Filthy Gorgeous, welcomed visitors from Yorkshire and the West Coast of Scotland for this year’s event. Unfortunately the visitors didn’t bring the sunshine and the weekend proved challenging with rain and an easterly breeze of 8 -14 knots.

The Melges 24 Risky Business came out on top in a closely fort regatta. The Beneteau 25 No limit took 2nd place just ahead of the Cork 1720 Water Tiger.

Racing began Saturday morning. Three back to back races gave very competitive yachting. Risky Business (melges 24) and water tiger (cork 1720) split the honours in the first two races. The Shearwater (RSK6) was close behind in race three but neither they nor No Limit (Beneteau 25) could split the leaders after day 1.

Wylam Brewery donated Beer to all the crews on the Saturday night and the brewery together with Trident-UK helped provide prizes for the event.

In Sunday’s first race, Water Tiger (cork 1720) was OCS which unfortunately moved them down the leader board. Another cork 1720 Tonka showed well in the Sunday racing to improve their standing with two good 2nd places. Corkanut (cork 1720) finished strongly to secure a 4th overall. But the Melges 24 continued where they’d left off with two bullets finishing off an excellent regatta.

In its 2nd year the event again proved to be a great success. It will continue next year, being incorporated as part of East Coast Sailing Week at Royal Northumberland in June 2008.
