Mudeford Week at Mudeford Sailing Club - Overall

by Mike Roach 4 Aug 2007 08:48 BST 28 July - 3 August 2007

A superb day to finish the week, with a sunny F4 and 3 races to go. The Ladies race got away first and after an indifferent start, last year’s winner Jane Challener (Laser) just eased in front of ace starter Kate Grandfield (Radial) with Rowena Hope very close behind. The slower boats were led by Charmaine Barnett (Highcliffe, Mirror), who was having a battle with first-time racer Claire van Wingerden in a Pico. Some dubious sex-testing had let through the odd cross-dresser, the most outrageous of whom was Peter/Petronella Nicholson, crewed by Linda Monk in a Norfolk Urchin. The race was won by Jane Challener, by a mere 10 points from Charmaine Barnett.

The last of the Series races was critical as any of 5 sailors could win, but Phil Sowden clinched the event with a cracking port flyer across the whole fleet. Expat Richard Batten took 2nd in a Laser with Stephen waite (Highcliffe, Megabyte) 3rd. Ian Bray could just not quite make his Solo go fast enough and finished 4th and young star Joe Powell 5th. In the Slow Fleet Peter Nicholson also ported the fleet, but Sue & Alec Batten got a well-deserved 1st.

The final race is always a Pursuit, “arranged” by the race officer to give slower boats a good chance. Clive Sampson grabbed it with both hands to take first place by a mile from Paul Dominey and Alison Hinde 3rd.

Great weather, great racing and a fantastic week all round.
