West Riding Sailing Club Swordfish Open

by Peter Limebear 31 May 2000 11:08 BST

The 27th May saw an excellent turnout of 11 boats for the Swordfish Open held as part of the WRSC regatta at Wintersett. Conditions over the three days varied from hail driven gusts to light fickle moments of frustration but the overall result was three superb days of very competitive sailing. John & Jonathan Gledhill (boat 133) threw down the gauntlet with two straight wins on the first day setting the pace for the weekend. 133 eventually taking overall honours with an impressive six wins and one second place from the seven races.

Remaining places were battled out to the windward mark on the final race. But the best spectator action came from race five when the duelling helms of Phil Thompson, Billy Gardner and Mike Wallace fought fearlessly throughout the final beats for mid fleet positions behind Ted Farrance and Alan Padgett.

Overall results:

Pos Helm and Crew Club
------------------------------------------------
1st John and Jonathan/Rachel Gledhill WRSC
2nd Alan and James Padgett WRSC
3rd Ted Farrance and Ron Walls WRSC
4th Phil and Jaqui Thompson WRSC
5th Brian Ruston and Trevor Eggett Hornsea SC
6th Bill Gardner and Alan Beecham WRSC
