The 27 competitors who made it to the Welsh Harp for this year's Wembley Wassail pursuit race were met by overcast skies and a disappointingly light breeze - certainly not enough to blow away New Year hangovers.
The Firefly of Hannah Rose and Sam Langan held the lead for the first hour before being overhauled by Mark Wolf sailing GP14 13421 with Graham Ireland, making his annual pilgrimage to the Harp, hard on his heals in Laser 183200. The MRX is optimised for light winds and flat water and immaculate sailing from these two was not enough to prevent the MRX's from carving through the fleet.
Steve Jannering in MRX 3606 took the lead with 30 minutes to go and after that was only seriously challenged by Tom O'Neill in MRX 3617. Only some bunching of the fleet as the wind died and filled kept the race alive. At the end Steve won by a comfortable margin from Tom. Peter Walker in MRX 3620 narrowly held off a last minute challenge from Rob Jannering in RS200 1130, with Graham Ireland pushed into fifth and Mark Wolf ultimately finishing 7th.
