115th Travemuende Week - Day 8

by Andreas Kling 31 Jul 2004 08:04 BST 23 July - 1 August 2004

Sach brothers' tenth Travemuende Week victory!

If there was anything like a 10.0 in sailing, Helge and Christian Sach would certainly have got it on Friday, 30 July. With a dream series of eight out of nine possible wins, they have not only the winners of the Formula 18 class of the 115th Travemuende Week. At the same time, the two brothers from nearby Zarnekau seized their tenth victory at the world's second largest sailing regatta. Their usual competitor Johannes Polgar just as easily won the Olympic Tornado class with his spare crew Phillip Wetzig ahead of the Austrian team Thomas Zajac and Thomas Czajka.

"It was not easy as the results make you believe it was, though," commented Helge Sach their races. For a couple of times, they had not even been among the leading three at the windward mark and so they really had to fight their way to the top position. But their better speed downwind made the difference. "With the ever-changing winds this week, Christian was in complete control tactically," praised the helmsman his brother and explained why they finished six minutes ahead of the fleet in one race.

"Jojo" Polgar had decided to come to sail in the 115th Travemuende Week when the official deadline for filing an entry had already expired. "My crew Carsten Happel was not available," said the 26-year old. "But when Phillip stepped in and Christian Sach begged me to come, we were on our way here." The duel Polgar/Sach only took place with regard to wins this time, as they had started in different classes, but Polgar was glad he came. "It was fantastic sailing in the last two day, and conditions you rarely find in Germany."

They may return next year with even more ambitions, because the organizers of Travemuende Week are already negotiating to have the Tornado European Championships. "That would the absolute highlight of the sailing programme," said Peer-Axel Rahn from the organizing team, "and we would definitely dedicate a special race-course and make sure that the Euro would be held in adequate conditions." It has taken place twice in Travemuende and also a Worlds. "The sailing area is ideal; and we sailors would love to have it as part of Travemuende Week and not separately," confirms Helge Sach.

It will be exciting finals on Saturday, 31 July with the German Open of the 5.5mR boats, the International 14s, Sportsboats and Melges 24 plus seven other classes. The Sunday, 1 August will be a lay-day for the sailors and hopefully give them time to enjoy the festival mile along the river Trave before the 115th Travemuende Week will end with spectacular fireworks.
