Dell Quay Sailing Club Regatta

by Liz Sagues 23 Jun 2008 00:54 BST 22 June 2008

Spray and sun characterised Dell Quay SC’s regatta, sailed in a force 5-6 southwesterly which challenged competitors in the nine separate fleets and meant the planned long courses had to be restricted to much shorter circuits. An entry of 49 was, in the circumstances, much higher than expected.

Largest fleet was the slow handicap, with a hotly contested start followed by remarkably close racing round the two-lap course. At the front, visitor Edward Thorburn (Finn) was challenged by regatta organiser Chris Turner, crewed in his Snipe by Chris West, until mainsheet problems meant the Snipe dropped back a little. It held on to second place, though, with visitors Antony and Marcia Lynall (Enterprise) challenging hard in third.

Dell Quay’s Gordon Barclay led five other Solos – all from neighbouring Chichester YC – with Derek Jackman taking second. The Laser 2000 fleet was entirely home boats, as was the junior handicap, where Lucy Goff (Laser 4.7) narrowly beat Ben Hoddy and Stu Denyer (RSFeva) – the only competitors in the whole event to brave flying a gennaker, if only briefly.

Generous sponsorship came from Harbour Chandlers of Emsworth and neighbouring pub the Crown & Anchor, which presented a new trophy for a Dell Quay crew which showed particular perseverance. It was awarded to John Martin and Avril Sargent, who completed the course in their heavily-reefed Enterprise without capsizing.
