Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race at Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club

by G.J. Lester 8 Apr 2004 08:58 BST 31 July 2004

Bright sunshine and blue skies greeted the 73 boats at the start of the annual Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race from Beaumaris to Traeth Bychan the home of RWBSC. The resident high pressure meant a lack of wind but the race, sponsored by Robinsons Breweries and Dickies of Bangor, eventually started as a breeze filled in from the NW.

13 cats were away first followed by 58 monos. GP 14s provided the largest fleet with huge support from Chester Sailing Club who proudly wore special team T shirts. There was a beat up the picturesque Menai Straits and through Puffin Sound. Kites were flown as the fleets approached Benlechh and again from Moelfre to the finishing line. There were many keen battles fought, not the least between cousins William Yeates and Emma Norris in a 505 and RS 400 respectively for the under 18 crew’s prize. William narrowly won.

Congratulations to Simon Potts & Alan Woosey who won the mono race and to James & Cameron Douglas who won the cat race. This was the first time the race had been sailed on a Saturday as RWBSC are encouraging competitors to make a weekend of the event. Racing was planned for the Sunday and a number of boats stayed over. Sadly the wind did not stay but all enjoyed the weekend.
