Delta Lloyd Cadet Worlds at Medemblik, Holland - Days 1 & 2

This year’s Cadet World Championships and Promotional Regatta are being held in Medemblik, from 1st to 8th August. 81 boats from 14 countries have entered the Worlds and will race as one fleet. 97 boats from 7 countries have entered the Promotionals, including 52 from the UK. They will race in two fleets for the first part of the competition, before being divided into Gold and Silver fleets.

Day 1

Racing commenced in a Force 4 South-Westerly wind with excellent visibility throughout the day. World Championships

Race 1

Crews taking the left hand side of the course dominated the early part of the race with Will Kennedy / Loni Lilienthal (GBR 8539) leading at the first Windward mark from Joanna Freeman / Holly Francis (GBR 9575) and Rodrigo Abalo Martinez / Joaquin Minos Vanlaethem (ESP9590). The lead boats maintained these positions until the second beat when the Spanish boat took the lead at the second Windward from Quentin Lauwers / Nele De Munck (BEL 8518) with Eliezier Fernandez Alvarez / Javier Perez Martinez (ESP9499) in third and the two GBR boats closely in touch. Martinez (ESP 9590) took the line from Lauwers (BEL 8518) in 2nd with Freeman (GBR 9575) in 3rd place. Other GBR crews to produce good starts to their campaign included Will Kennedy / Loni Lilienthal (GBR 8539) in 5th, Josh Flack / Naomi Flack (GBR 8434} in 6th, George Ayre / Nicholas Sutton (GBR 8542) in 8th and Alex Horlock / Tim Pearce (GBR 9382) in 11th.

Race 2

Wind shifts and a steadily dropping breeze provided challenging conditions for the second race and by the second Windward mark, Ivan Consentino / Augustin Romero (ARG 8010) had established a useful lead over Quentin Lauwers / Nele De Munck (BEL 8518) with Oleg Yatsenko / Yurly Kriger (UKR 9251) in 3rd and Peter Foldesi / Marton Munka (HUN 9557) in 4th. At the second Leeward gate, the three leaders had broken away from the remainder of the fleet and maintained their positions through to the finish. Josh Flack / Naomi Flack (GBR 8434} was the best GBR finisher in 8th place. At the end of the first day the overall position was 1st, BEL 8518, 2nd GBR 8434, 3rd ARG 8010, 4th UKR 9251, 5th AUS 9012 and 6th ESP 9590.

Promotional Regatta

British boats showed stongly in the first day’s racing. In Race 1, the top boats in the first group were Stevie Green / Ben Thame GBR 8420 in first, Zoe McBride / Rhos Hawes GBR 8533 in second and James-John Dwyer-Wilkinson GRB 8412 in third , while in the second group, the winners were Alex Young / Jack Hardie GBR 8513 with John Page / Alexander Page GBR 8521 in second and Sophie Dingwall / Josie Gummer GBR 5000 in third.

In second race, the first group was won by Tim Carter / Henry Stone GBR 9374 with Stevie Green / Ben Thame GBR 8420 in second and Julita Osinska / Karolina Terpikowska POL 9487 in third. Sophie Dingwall / Josie Gummer GBR 5000 were first in the second group, followed by Alex Frost / Rory Sanderson GBR 8402 in second and Alex Young / Jack Hardie GBR 8513 in third.

At the end of the first day, the overall position is 1st GBR 8420, 2nd GBR5000, 3rd GBR8513, 4th GBR8402, 5th GBR8521 and 6th GBR9374.

Day 2

The fine weather seen on Day 1 continued until early afternoon when an extended band of rain moved through the race course. A South-Westerly wind moved steadily towards the South before recovering some 15 degrees.

Race 3

The fleet was away at the second attempt following a general recall. At the first Windward mark Sam Vinkier / Thijs Klumpers (BEL 9149) led from overnight leaders Quentin Lauwers / Nele De Munck (BEL 8518) and Eliezier Fernandez Alvarez / Javier Perez Martinez (ESP9499) . The reach to the Gybe Mark saw changes at the top with the winners of the second race, Ivan Consentino / Augustin Romero (ARG 8010) taking the lead, closely followed by Eliezier Fernandez Alvarez / Javier Perez Martinez (ESP9499) and Joel Aulich / Jack Furey (AUS 9528). The three leaders together with Quentin Lauwers / Nele De Munck (BEL 8518) had opened a useful gap by the first Leeward mark and by the second Windward, the Argentineans led the Belgians, with the Spanish boat in third place. These positions were maintained until the final beat, when Joanna Freeman / Holly Francis (GBR 9575) and the Australian boat, who together opted to take the right side of the course, overhauled the Spanish crew to finish third and fourth respectively, behind the Argentineans in first and the Belgians in second. Josh Flack, who had been placed 2nd overnight, was the next best GBR boat in 15th place.

Race 4

The top boats in the first race featured strongly in closing stages of the second race of the day. The fleet was again away at the second attempt. Ivan Consentino / Augustin Romero (ARG 8010) led at the first Windward mark followed by Julia Marfil Daza / Cristina Laucirica Busea (ESP 8087), Joanna Freeman / Holly Francis (GBR 9575) and Quentin Lauwers / Nele De Munck (BEL 8518).These positions were maintained at the Gybe Mark, but by the first Leeward mark, the Belgian had moved into second place behind the Argentinean. Third place changed hands throughout the remainder of the race with Maurice Bakker / Jan Wanders (NED 8515), Oleg Yatsenko / Yurly Kriger (UKR 9251), Jakob Gotowicki / Damian Frank (POL 9602) and Joanna Freeman / Holly Francis (GBR 9575) all challenging for the position. Consentino in ARG 8010 successfully held off the challenges of Lauwers in BEL 8518 and the British boat came through on the final beat to take third place and produce an identical top three to the day’s first race. Tom Kinver / Jamie Proffitt (GBR 8511) achieved their best result of the event finishing 7th.

At the end of the second day, the overall position was 1st ARG 8010, 2nd BEL 8518, 3rd GBR 9575, 4th UKR 9251, 5th 9012 AUS and 6th ESP 9590.

Promotionals

British boats again featured strongly in the second day’s racing. In the first race, the top boats in the first group were Alex Young / Jack Hardie GBR 8513 in first, Stevie Green / Ben Thame GBR 8420 in second and Alec Bailey / Samantha Bailey AUS 4887 in third, while in the second group, the winners were Arthur Henderson / Matthew Currell GBR 8561, with Yamile Bueters / Pam Witsenboer NED 8339 in second and Charlie Impey / Jack Young GBR 9047 in third.

In second race, the first group was won by Tim Carter / Henry Stone GBR 9374 with Alex Young / Jack Hardie GBR 8513 in second and John Page / Alexander Page GBR 8521 in third, while in the second group, Amy Yeoman / Alice Alcock GBR 9161 were first, with Stevie Green / Ben Thame GBR 8420 in second and Katie Barr / Laura Sutton GBR in third.

At the end of the second day, the overall position was 1st GBR 8513, 2nd GBR 8420, 3rd GBR 9374, 4th GBR 5000, 5th GBR 9161 and 6th GBR 8521.
