Cadet Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 5

by David Elliott 22 Aug 2008 10:04 BST 16-22 August 2008

The winners and runners-up are now known ahead of Friday’s final race. Two further races were sailed today, with overnight leaders Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell sailing 8561 winning both. Alex Young/Jack Hardie in 8513 achieved a fourth and a sixth to secure the runners-up spot. Lighter winds prevailed today, which saw some of the younger crews at the top of the fleet.

Race 8

The fleet were away at the second time of asking under a Black Flag. Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) led at the Windward mark, with Erin Williams/Toby Fitzgerald (9225) in second, Oliver Palierakis/William Palierakis (9005) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth. At the end of the first run, Arthur and Matthew maintained their lead with Emily and Katie ahead of Oliver and William. These positions were maintained until the final run, when the leaders briefly surrendered first place to initially Emily and Katie and then Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407), who had been steadily improving throughout the race. However, order was returned on the final leg with Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561) winning their first race of the event, with Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407) in second, John Page/Alexander Page (8521) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth.

Race 9

Abigail Croft/Katie Hinde (9378) led the fleet at the Windward mark from Will Matthews/Harriet Ayre (8847) in second, Jessica Quinlan/Chris Sycamore (8407) in third and Emily Kinver/Katie Kinver (8511) in fourth. By the Leeward mark, George Ayre/Nicholas Sutton (8542) and Hugo Pullen/Guy Pullen (9668) were challenging the leaders. Emily and Katie were holding the lead into the final run, but were overtaken by Arthur Henderson/Matthew Currell (8561), who had recovered from 11th place at the first Windward. A tight battle ensued right to the line with Arthur and Matthew taking the gun for their second victory of the day, with Emily and Katie in second and Hugo and Guy Pullen in third.
