Hungarian George Wossala (HUN77) at the top of the fleet after day two of racing
After the second day of racing at the Soling World Championship at La Marina di Scarlino in Maremma the Hungarian crew with George Wossala the helm, Peter Nemeth middleman and Karoly Vezer bowman lead the provisional scoreboard with 15 points. Argentinean Gustavo Warburg (ARG32) is second and Norwegian Preben Asbjornrod is third. Best of the Italians Maffezzoli.
At 12.15 p.m. under partially sunny skies and a 10-12 knot breeze from the north east the Race Committee fired the gun for race 3. The 40 boat fleet representing 17 nations set their bows for the windward mark, sailing toward the rolling hills of Maremma and the medieval village of Scarlino. Halfway through the race weather conditions bagan deteriorating and the wind shifted by 180 degrees. The Race Committee’s quick response ensured the completion of race three thanks to the repositioning of the race course and the change in length of the competition, shortened by one leg. The race was won by Austrian Carl Auteried (AUT117), followed by Argentinean Gustavo Warburg (ARG32) in second place and Austrian Stefan Glanz (AUT114) in third.
The weather conditions continued to worsen with thundershowers over the Gulf of Follonica and the Race Committee decided to abandon all racing for the day.
In the evening the 130 sailors with their families from Germany, Austria, United States of America, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Denmark, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Nederland, Norway and Italy enjoyed a dinner organized by the Club Nautico Scarlino, savoring the food specialties and wine of the area.
Tomorrow two more races are scheduled.
