Racing Rules work shop at Spinnaker Club on Wednesday

by Graham Stones 7 Apr 2009 14:42 BST 8 April 2009

Rules expert John Doerr will be running a workshop on the new racing rules for 2009 – 2012 at Spinnaker Club, near Ringwood in the New Forest, at 6.30pm on Wednesday 8th April.

Aimed at sailors of all levels the workshop will look at everything from the basics to the more complex and often confusing rules and also look at the recent changes to the racing rules and what this means to us all out on the water.

John is a former world dinghy champion and was rules coach to Team GBR in Barcelona 1992, to Whitbread / Volvo Ocean Race / America’s Cup / Admiral's Cup teams, on the International Jury for 4 Olympic Games and was Jury Chairman and Chief Umpire for the America’s Cup in 1995. He is currently a member of the International Jury for the Volvo Ocean Race and rules coach to Artemis in the Vendee Globe. John has a unique approach to helping sailors, coaches and officials understand and master the Racing Rules of Sailing. Building on his experience at all levels from junior club sailors to elite Olympic and America’s Cup athlete. John can tune his work to suit any audience. He firmly believes that the rules are useless outside of the context of the race itself and they also define how we want to play our game. His passion is for the sport not just for its rules.

The workshop is broken into two sessions, starting at 6.30 we will break for supper at 7.30 and continue again at 8.15 for a further hour. The workshop is open to all interested sailors from any club or class. There is a £5 charge for non club members. The club bar will be open and an excellent supper is available from Amy’s kitchen.
