Mirror Nationals at Pwllheli Sailing Club - Overall

by Simon Lovesey 28 Jul 2009 14:48 BST 23-25 July 2009

Going into the last day of the Mirror Nationals the leader board was wide open with only three points separating the top 3, and with only one discard any of the top ten boats were in with a chance to take the title.

Having only managed one race on Day 1, Windy Wednesday, Mike Pearson and his race team were keen to get four races in on the final day.

The fleet launched in glorious sunshine and a light breeze, which ensured the Nationals would have been competed over a wide range of conditions to give one of the fairest championships for many years.

2005 World Champion Ross Kearney and Katy Jones stepped up a gear in their quest to make this third time lucky to win the Nationals after finishing second on the past two occasions by taking the first race of the day (R5).

The lighter conditions saw a different group of sailors hit the front of the fleet with R6 going to 2008 National Champions the Barry sisters.

Former Fireball World Champion Andy Smith and son Tom Smith made Race 7 their own, and with a second in the last race took the day prize.

Going into the final race things were still wide open, with Juniors Tom Lovesey (14) and Milly Pugh (11) pushing hard to try and become one of the youngest Mirror Champions and Ross and Katy fighting not to be second overall for the third year running. With mark roundings being relayed back to the big screen in the club house and over the web, there was great excitement amongst those ashore. Fellow juniors Charlotte Fitzgerald and Annie Sibthorp led at the first mark, from Tom and Milly, Ross and Katy were buried in 12 th place, which would have given Tom and Milly the event. As the race progressed, Ross and Katy closed the gap, climbing to 7th and Tom and Milly dropping to 5th to give the 2005 World Champion the 2009 UK National title and Tom and Milly second who also took the junior crown. Juniors Charlotte Fitzgerald and Annie Sibthorp completed the podium positions.

Overall Results:

2009 National Champions, Ross Kearney and Katy Jones
1st Juniors, Tom Lovesey and Milly Pugh
