Byte Open at Paxton Lakes Sailing Club

by Nick Miller 30 Sep 2004 10:03 BST 26 September 2004

On the 26th of September the bytes travelled to Paxton for what was to be the last travellers event of the year. Five sailors turned up which was a little disappointing but despite this we still had some very exciting racing, as the standards of all five sailors were very similar.

The first race with winds of about 5mph saw Ray Smith (Dabchicks) lead the whole race up until the last 2 legs where Nick Miller (Marconi). Throughout the race the positions swapped regularly but Nick came out first with Ray 2nd and Adrian Stell (Tutor) 3rd.

In race 2 the wind came up to about 15mph. Nick Lead from the go followed by John Futcher. After a few laps of place swapping Nick got a huge lead followed by Maggie Futcher (Weston) who had been extending her 2nd place throughout the race till she got hit by a big gust downwind causing a deaf-roll and leaving her frustrated in last place. Nick won by a big margin followed by John and then Ray.

The final race the wind picked up slightly more. The course was very confusing this race which lead to Nick, who lead off the start, going in the wrong direction with the 2 Futchers following letting Ray sneak through after his bad start. The places again swapped continually but in the end Nick won once again giving him an obvious 1st overall, followed by John and the Ray. Overall a good days racing and a very tactical event.

As this event was the last of the season the travellers series prize giving was held at Paxton Lake Sailing Club. Congratulations to the winner Adrian Stell.
