Cadet Worlds at Buenos Aires, Argentina - Day 3

by Andy Shorrock 1 Jan 2010 17:03 GMT 26 December 2009 - 4 January 2010

Change in the leaderboard

Conditions continued to challenge the sailors on Day 3 of the Cadet Worlds. Races 6 and 7 were completed in sparkling sunshine, although the shifting breeze and very strong current running across the course saw much place changing. The wind started the day at 11 knots from the North East but finished at 6 knots from the East having swung through almost 40 degrees.

In race 6 and after 2 general recalls, 8 boats fell foul of the black flag rule and were disqualified. With the fleet away on the next start Alec & Samantha Bailey (AUS 4887) led around the windward mark closely followed by Tom Alleman & Jens Vancraenenbroeck (BEL 9739) and Chris Brewer & Ole Alcock (GBR 8997). Tom & Jens moved into the lead on the 2nd beat as Alec & Samantha slipped back behind Chris & Ole. Gonzalo Nandin & Julian Rodriguez Viegas (ARG 9476) also made ground and attacked on the final beat to pass Chris & Ole. Tom & Jens took the gun with Gonzalo & Julian 2nd and Chris & Ole 3rd. Other GBR boats struggled to make ground on the front group with Will Kennedy & Rhos Hawes (GBR 8539) in 7th and Arthur Henderson & Matthew Currell (GBR 8561) in 8th.

In race 7, a large shift and wind hole on the first windward leg seemed to invert the fleet and place the early leaders firmly at the back. This did not seem to deter Alec & Samantha Bailey (AUS 4887) who again led at the windward mark and this time managed to stretch away unchallenged to take the gun. The GBR boats were not well placed at this stage and with the wind dropping and swinging they struggled to recover. Chris & Ole (GBR 8997) made the best job of this by clawing back to 7th. ARG 4551 made their first podium finish with 2nd ahead of ARG 5517 in 3rd. BEL 9739 completed a good day with a 6th.

Clara Cosentino & Cristobal Billoch in ARG 8023 managed a 5th and 12th today to take the overall lead in the Championship, 2 pts ahead of Arthur Henderson & Matthew Currell and 5pts ahead of Chris Brewer & Ole Alcock.

In the Promotional fleet, Mary Henderson and Ben Shorrock scored two 6th place finishes and are placed 4th overall.
