Laser 5000 season preview

by Tom Hill 10 Mar 2010 08:12 GMT

As spring is on the horizon, the Laser 5000 class are preparing themselves for a big year. The class has been boosted by new owners and contacting 10 new active members from Germany. The class have organised 3 Events in UK, another training event and for the first time in a few years, a European Championship in Germany.

Training Weekend at Thorney Island - 15/16th May

This event was held last year with great success. The idea is to invite those less confident with the boat to a weekend focussed on learning the basics of the boat, whilst also mixing and learning from the more experienced crews who also attend.

Nationals at Lymington Town SC - 3/4th July

A weekend focused on racing for the title of Nationals champion, the coveted title for most of the 5000 crews. This will be part of the Lymington Town Regatta, hopefully with your support we will be able to get a minimum of 15 boats on the water there.

European Championships at the British Mohnesee Sailing Club - 2nd-6th August

This year, for the first time in several years we are going to hold a European Championships. The British Mohnesee Sailing Club in north west Germany (near the town of Soest) have very kindly agreed to host us at some very reasonable prices. The event will allow our new European friends to join in the fun and who knows, we may be able to get in the region of 20 boats there which would be fantastic. The Notice Of Race and other information is on the website.

Broadstairs - 25/26th September, along with the 4K Fleet.

This is another event for those wanting more 5000 fleet action and joined with the 4000s it is set to be a good weekend.

Inland Championships on 16/17th October

The final class sponsored event will be the Inland Championships in October, which once again will be at Rutland water along with the 2000s, 4000s and Vagos.

These are the planned events for this year and with support from Noble Marine we are hoping this could be a great turning point for the class. If you are thinking of attending any of the events please email Taff on www.laser5000.lasersailing.com) and Facebook page to go with our forum, so please check them out.
