Cadet Open at Frensham Pond Sailing Club

At Frensham Pond Sailing Club the Cadet Dinghy has been a central feature for fifty seven years. So once again the annual open meeting for Cadets was a big occasion.

Nearly eighty competitors in thirty nine boats took part, with many more parents, friends and support helpers ashore. It may have been the warmest weekend of 2010 but the high pressure system over Southern England produced a weak and shifting north easterly breeze. No doubt this in part played into the hands of the top local helms.

It was a credit to race officer, Chris Ellis, that four races were started and completed in these difficult conditions. The first race was won Frensham pair Caroline Croft and Jacob Payne followed in second place by Abigail Croft crewed by Alex Page. It was a measure of the tricky conditions that the first five places all went to local boats.

In the second race visiting crew: Max and Francesca Ingall from Fisher’s Green got the measure of the shifts with the win followed by Caroline and Jacob. This set a pattern for the rest of the meeting with Caroline and Jacob coming out on top with Matt and Francesca second. Local crews took the remaining four places.

A packed club house heard the sad news that Frensham Cadet Captain and parent, Neil Hardie was standing down following an outstanding term in charge. Frensham now has a large contingent of local children hooked on sailing. The club is confident that many will follow over eighty names on the club’s top honours board. Frensham Commodore Judith Young presented Neil with a portrait of himself against the club background. Also thanked were Chris Ellis race officer, Paul Darcy who worked all day on the results computer, Ian Philpot on rescue, and David Elliott of the Cadet Association for his support and photographs. The club was pleased to welcome event sponsors Guildford Marine. Once these formalities were over, the assembly swarmed over the traditional Frensham free tea the contents of which vanished rapidly.
