RC Laser TT at Eastbourne & District Model Yacht Club

by Dave Fowler 19 May 2010 09:06 BST

Round 3 of the RC Laser National TT took us to Eastbourne. After waiting for the wind to steady in direction the buoys were laid and 14 Sailors took to the water with ‘B’ rigs, the simple dogleg sausage course gave for quick exciting and very close racing. The first batch of races had bullets for Dave Fowler, Buzz Coleman x 3, Liz Tushingham and Keith Tyson, with people changing between ‘B’ and ‘C’ rigs due to the gusty winds.

Then some thing magic happened, the Eastbourne Ladies arrived at the starting area with a tea/coffee and bun trolley (which was back in the afternoon), for a welcome break, which must have been John Tushingham Kick start, as he resumed with a string of 8 bullets up to and after lunch only interrupted on a few occasions.

Mid afternoon the wind started to ease but still with large gusts and there was a grate deal of rig swapping which allowed for some great boat control from Coleman and Fowler controlling the ‘B’ rigs when around them ‘C’ rigs were nose diving, eventually the day was called at 3 pm with 19 races sailed.

A big thank you to the race officer team for their excellent running of the day, tweaking the course and line when required and getting 19 races in.

Also a big well done to Michael Sykes at his first RC Laser event, he improved throughout the day and was pushing top 5 places by the end.

More light and shifty winds at Barton's Point Coastal Park For today's racing the wind was very much in the lower numbers. The forecast was for 5 knots and direction SE. With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct 2024

With the wind forever increasing in strength a couple of 'D' rigs were brought out The showers had just about died out on arrival, to leave us with a nice Blowy Westerly. No need for the big sails today and it was a decider for the next 2 sail sizes, giving us a mix for the first couple of races. Posted on 18 Jun 2024
