Unicorn Nationals at Stone Sailing Club
by Peter Toft 9 Aug 2010 20:41 BST
2-6 August 2010
The weather conditions over the event varied from light to strong winds and sunshine to thunder storms, providing some very interesting, testing and competitive racing.
The first two races in very light variable conditions favoured local competitors, Toft and Dorks. At the end of the second day after four races and force 2 to 3 winds, Piper and Taylor had joined them to establish a very close competition. The winning margin on several occasions being decided on the final leg, on occasion by less than a boat length.
The wind strength increased progressively with each race and the heavier helms of Piper and Taylor took advantage to improve their positions while Toft and Dorks continued to sail well and took advantage of any mistakes made to remain in contention.
Piper continued to prove the most consistent sailor under the varied conditions and achieved first position in 5 of the 8 races, winning back the National title from Toft, last years winner.
The next three championship places were decided on the last beat of the last race when Taylor received the winning gun just ahead of Piper, Dorks and Toft. The final margin of one point separated these three positions.
