The RYA, LaserPerformance and the UK Laser Class Association are delighted to welcome Brett Cokayne as the first Project Co-ordinator of the Activate Your Laser Fleet scheme.

“We are excited to announce Brett’s appointment” comments Graham Manchester from RYA Sport Development.

“The ‘Activate’ project has grown significantly since it was launched this year and we now have 50 clubs and about 100 volunteers involved in the project so will be great to have Brett on board to help develop the scheme further as it continues to grow.”

Originally from the East Midlands, Brett has previously worked for several marine based organisations and after deciding to pursue a career in coaching two years ago he took on a role as an RYA Regional Club Coach working to develop participation.

Commenting on his new appointment as the Activate Co-ordinator, Brett says “I am delighted to be involved in the Activate Your Laser Scheme. There are many Laser sailors who need some encouragement to get back on the water and the Activate Scheme is there to reignite people’s interest back into sailing.

“It isn’t just about being on the water, we will be showing people how to maintain Lasers by doing their own repairs and keeping the cost down as well as offering people coaching sessions to give them the confidence to get back out on the water. Having fun on the water is important but we will also be developing new friendships off the water too.”

The “Activate” scheme is aimed at developing regular adult participation in sailing and supports clubs to develop ideas on how to encourage Laser owners and sailors back onto the water.

In his position as ‘Activate’ Co-ordinator Brett will be responsible for promotion, delivery, and follow up of further Activate Your Laser Fleet workshops across England. If you would like to sign up for a 2011 workshop please contact Brett directly on Mob 07800 779 302 or email b_cokayne@hotmail.com.
