Cadet Promotional regatta in Adelaide overall

by Louise Brearey 12 Jan 2005 09:11 GMT 29 December 2004 - 4 January 2005

The Cadet Promotional Regatta, ran alongside the Cadet World Championship in Adelaide. The open event attracted entries from Britain and Belgium as well as the host country Australia, with many competitors from the Australian Nationals staying on.

In the unusually light winds Katherine Kimber and Billie Quinlan sailing Hot Rocks were the most consistent on the first two days, with two seconds and a first.Hamish Stone and Jenny sudell sailing a borrowed Australian boat Drop Bears, won the first race, and brother Ben Stone with Theo Bull sailing Gnat won the third race, when only half the fleet finished.

After two days with no sailing due to lack of wind, competitors launched in a good breeze, on day 4, but this was short lived, when a thunderstorm provided a dramatic backdrop to the race, but also killed the breeze. Australian boats took top 3 places in the race, with Catherine and Elizabeth Johnstone winning in Imp. The next race was abandoned due to lack of wind with Ben Stone and Theo Bull out in front. yet more unseasonable weather in the form of a storm meant a dealy in racing because of strong winds (only hours after the race abandoned because of no wind). A race was completed in the early evening, Sam Brearey and Chris Videlo sailing a borrowed tasmanian boat Capricious led the fleet for most of the race, eventually being caught by Hamish Stone and Jenny Sudell.

Racing on the final day was abandoned due to the strong gusty winds. This left Katherine and Kimber and Billie Quinlan in first place, they were the most consistent in the series which did not complete sufficient races for the discard to be counted. Ben Stone and Theo Bull were second, with Sam Brearey and Chris Videlo third. First Australians were Clair McCartney and Lucy Shephard in fifth place sailing Shimmer.
