The Royal Cape Yacht Club is proud to announce the start date for the iconic Cape to Rio Yacht Race, as 4 January 2014.
This follows the re-establishment of the race in 2011 where there were 17 entries from 6 nations. The race will once again be hosted by the Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro and John Martin, Chairman of the Organizing Committee expects a fleet of at least 50 yachts in this Race, one of the most romantic on the sailing calendar, linking two of the most beautiful cities in the world and with Brazil as hosts of the World Cup later in the year and the famous Rio Carnival taking place – the 2014 Race promises to be an exciting one.
To-date interest has been shown from varying quarters including Angola, Monaco, the Oyster Class Association, the Navy’s of South Africa, India and Brazil and Britain and obviously our own club IRC Racing fleet which has been bolstered in the last two to three years. Another big consideration for us is how to accommodate the highly successful Class 40 boats from Europe and discussions are ongoing in this regard.
The race is open to Mono-hulls in the IRC Division 1 and 2; Cruising Multi-hull and Mono-hull yachts and yachts may either be double- handed entries or a crew of 4 or more. The course will be from the start-line Cape Town directly to the finish-line in Rio de Janeiro. For safety reasons there is limiting latitude of 37° 07’S.
The title sponsor will be announced once negotiations are concluded.
We look forward in welcoming you to the Mother City and to the Royal Cape Yacht Club, often referred to as “The Tavern of the Seas”.
The Notice of Race is available on the Royal Cape Yacht Club website.
