Gill, the specialist technical marine clothing brand has been awarded the coveted Queens award for Enterprise for International Trade as a result of building export sales to 75% of total revenue in financial year ending September 2011. Gill is one of three biggest brands in most countries around the world including America where it is generally regarded as the single biggest brand.
The company, founded in 1975 has grown from humble beginnings in the corner of a Long Eaton LACE factory to one of the top three technical sailing clothing brands in the world today. Gill products are regularly worn by world champions, Olympic teams and round the world sailors and the brand is regarded as one of the few you can really trust at the highest level of the sport.
Founder and Chairman Nick Gill; Commented that the award is “the result of many years hard work, growing the business and reinvesting for the future. We have built a reputation as the Technical Brand. Twenty five per cent of the company works in product design and development and the quality and innovation of the product range has contributed enormously to the success of the business. Additionally we have stuck to our core business and have not been distracted. We seemed to have sailed through the recession unscathed.
To add to the company’s celebrations, Gill has also just been confirmed as the technical clothing sponsor to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week for a further three years. Cowes week is the oldest and most famous sailing Regatta in the World and is attended by top sailors from all over the world and a perfect platform to promote the brand in the vibrant racing environment.
The product range today is wide ranging catering for all types of sailing and marine use from the Dinghy Sailor to Round the World Ocean Racers. Recent emphasis has been on the Keel Boat Racing sector and clothing for warmer climates to suit the growing export business.
Bryan Stewart, International Sales and Marketing Manager at Gill commented "Export sales development has been at the centre of the successful and sustainable growth that we have seen in the business in recent years, and to receive this prestigious award is a great honour as recognition of all the hard work of our team that has contributed to that success."
