Tideway Championship at Marconi Sailing Club

The annual Tideway Championship took place at the Marconi Sailing Club on the River Blackwater in Essex on 26th May 2012. It was organised by Nick Hillman, who is an ex Chairman of the association. The race officer was Derek Kirby, and the course was set by Dave Hull and his team; a full complement of safety boats was available.

The Tideway Owners Association has one race meeting a year, and they race for two trophies: the Tideway Challenge Trophy, and the Rose Bowl for single handed boats. This year there were 15 participants who faced strong Easterly winds and an equally strong flood tide. There were three races, with one discard.

The first race was a little hesitant with boats hanging back from the line and spread out all along it. Andante (TW1) expertly sailed by Richard and Debbie Phillips won all three races, but the rest of the fllet were closer each time. By the third race it was getting very close, everyone was aiming to be at the shore end of the start line out of the tide and to be first over the line. All were taking short tacking against the strong flood. This caused more than a few collisions, but the Tideway fleet is far too Corinthian to let rules spoil a good days sailing.
